Is It Worth Disconnecting Natural Gas?

Gas disconnection can save more than the gas you stop burning: in some places you can also eliminate an annual connection charge. But this only works if no gas appliances remain.

Convert the full system

List every appliance supplied by gas, including hot water, space heating and cooking. Convert them to suitable electric alternatives and verify the final disconnection process with your network operator.

Model future price changes

Consider separate assumptions for gas unit prices, gas standing charges, electricity tariffs and equipment efficiency. A lower electricity bill is not guaranteed without considering increased demand.

Retrofit versus new construction

In a retrofit you may discard useful equipment. In a new build you may avoid paying for the gas connection and gas appliances in the first place; compare the incremental costs.
